Songs from Smyrne Birds Basement

Continuing the Songs from Smyrne series, the Melbourne ensemble "Estudiantina of Melbourne" will perform a live concert spotlighting compositions post-population exchange. They'll emphasize pieces that rose to fame via gramophone recordings thereafter. The concert seeks to honor cultural diversity through music, spotlighting composers who resettled in mainland Greece and their profound impact on the musical milieu. Smyrne's musical landscape underwent significant shifts due to the Greece-Turkey population exchange in the 1920s, dispersing diverse musical traditions and fostering their preservation and evolution across various regions.

Today, echoes of Smyrneika music resonate in contemporary compositions, traditional ensembles, and the creations of modern artists inspired by the city's rich musical heritage. Smyrne, now Izmir in Turkey, occupies a pivotal role in the histories of Greek and Turkish musical traditions. It served as a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities, influencing its music with a fusion of Greek, Turkish, Jewish, and Armenian elements. Smyrneika is characterized by its unique sound, blending instruments like the oud, bouzouki, violin, kanun, and guitar, among others. Its melodies often evoke emotion and melancholy, reflecting the experiences and sentiments of Smyrne's diverse populace.

This event is co-presented with Con Kalamaras, The Hellenic Museum Melbourne, and The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne.

Music from the Greek Underworld - Open Studio Friday 13th September

Join us at Open Studio for an exploration of Music from the Greek underground of the 1930s and 1940s. Con Kalamaras/Paul Karalis & Alex Petropoulos will take the stage, presenting a repertoire that embodies the essence of the Greek Underground scene.

Rebetika music emerged within the gritty urban landscape of Greece during the early 20th century, serving as a poignant reflection of the trials and tribulations faced by marginalized communities. This musical genre, deeply rooted in the experiences of the urban poor, refugees, and outcasts, encapsulated themes of love, poverty, exile, and the harsh realities of city life.

However, due to its association with the clandestine world of the underground, rebetika was swiftly branded as illicit and subversive by the authorities of its time. Its lyrics often delved into topics and lifestyles considered immoral or disruptive to societal norms. Furthermore, the utilization of instruments like the bouzouki, closely linked with marginalized groups, only heightened its outlaw status.

In the eyes of the authorities, rebetika gatherings were viewed as hotbeds of criminal activity and dissent, prompting crackdowns and censorship measures. Yet, despite these obstacles, rebetika persevered, finding its audience in the shadowy confines of taverns and clandestine clubs where it echoed the voices of its creators.

Songs from Smyrne concert at Birds Basement

SHOW SOLD OUT SECOND SHOW TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON

This live concert tribute will focus on compositions that emerged after the population exchange, including the songs that gained prominence through gramophone recordings thereafter.

The concert aims to celebrate cultural diversity through its music, focusing on the composers who relocated to mainland Greece and their profound effect on the musical landscape. The music from Smyrne was significantly affected by the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s, leading to a dispersion of diverse musical traditions and their preservation and evolution in different regions.

Today, elements of Smyrneika music can still be heard in various contemporary musical compositions, traditional ensembles, and even in the works of modern artists who draw inspiration from the rich musical legacy of this historically vibrant city.

Smyrne, now known as Izmir in Turkey, holds a significant place in the history of Greek and Turkish musical traditions. It was a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities, influencing its music with a blend of Greek, Turkish, Jewish, and Armenian elements. Characterized by a distinctive sound, Smyrneika incorporates various instruments such as the oud, bouzouki, violin, kanun, and guitar, among others. It often features emotional and melancholic melodies, reflecting the experiences and sentiments of the diverse population living in Smyrne.

This event is a co-present with Con Kalamaras, Birds Basement, The Hellenic Museum Melbourne, The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria & Multicultural Arts Victoria

The Boite presents The Tsiftes Band

Tsiftes is a Rebetiko band from Melbourne featuring Con Kalamaras, Stav Thomopoulos, Alex Petropoulos, Niko Kapralos and Jenny Dixon.

Rebetiko music, often referred to as the Greek blues, originated in Greece during the 1920s and gained prominence as the musical expression of the marginalized and outlawed. Its roots can be traced back to early songs crafted within the confines of prisons, where inmates huddled in circles, strumming their crudely fashioned baglamas and singing tales of pain, heartbreak, and camaraderie. These instruments played a pivotal role in shaping the distinctive sound of Rebetiko.

The themes of suffering, emotional anguish, and solidarity were central to Rebetiko, reflecting the realities of the subculture during that period. As a testament to their commitment to preserving this unique cultural heritage, the members of Tsiftes have become renowned for their authentic interpretations and vocal harmonies. "Rebetiko music, known as the Greek blues, emerged in Greece in the 1920s as the music of the poor and the outlawed. Early songs were written in prisons where inmates crouched in circles, singing and playing their shonkily made baglamas. Central to Rebetiko are the subjects of pain, heartbreak and comradery, themes relevant to the subculture of the time.

Eager to preserve this small piece of cultural history, the members of Tsiftes are known for their authentic renditions and vocal harmonies. Plate smashing is allowed only in a strictly metaphorical manner.

Line up:

Con Kalamaras - Bouzouki/Vocals
Nikos Kapralos - Bouzouki
Stav Thomopoulos - Vocals
Alex Petropoulos - Guitar/Vocals
Jenny Dixon - Violin"
