The Rebetiko style emerged in Greece in the 1920s as the music of the poor and the outlawed. Early songs were written in prisons where inmates crouched in circles, singing and playing their shonkily made baglamas. In 2017 Rebetiko music was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Experience the nostalgic sounds of the bouzouki and baglama as "Tsiftes" play songs of the underground - of passion, pain and love.
Tsiftes are Melbourne Rebetiko veteran Con Kalamaras on bouzouki, the vocals of Greek songstress Stav Thomopoulos, and ardent young guitarist Alexander Petropoulos. The members of Tsiftes play Rebetiko extensively around Melbourne and are known for their soulful performances and vocal harmonies. Guest musicians will support Con, Stav and Alex to produce an authentic sound that's guaranteed to make you shout "Opa" and smash your plate (in a strictly metaphorical sense).
